Save on the New Road Tax: Taxing Your Electric Vehicle Before 31st March

By March 24, 2025April 15th, 2025No Comments

The UK government is introducing road tax for electric vehicles (EVs), bringing an end to the current exemption that has benefited EV owners. However, there is a way to delay the impact of this change and save money in the process. By taxing your EV before 31st March 2025, you can extend your current road tax rate of £0 for an additional 12 months.

You can re-tax your EV now even if the current tax has not run out

Why Does This Matter?

From 1st April 2025, all EVs will be subject to road tax, with the standard rate set at £195 per year. While this may not seem like a significant cost for a single vehicle, businesses and individuals with multiple EVs can make substantial savings by acting now.

How Much Can You Save?

The potential savings depend on when your road tax is due for renewal. Here are some examples:

  • If your EV’s road tax is due in April 2025, you may be able to avoid the new charge for an entire year, saving £195 per vehicle, by taxing it in March rather than April
  • If your renewal date is in February 2025, you might avoid the extra charge for two months  by taxing it again this month
  • For businesses with multiple EVs, delaying the new tax could add up to significant savings across a fleet of vehicles.

How to Renew Your Road Tax Now

Renewing your EV’s road tax is a quick and easy process. To do so, you will need:

  • Your vehicle’s logbook (V5C document)
  • Access to the government vehicle tax service

Don’t Miss Out on This Easy Win

With the deadline fast approaching, it makes sense to take advantage of the current £0 road tax while you still can. This is particularly important for businesses managing fleets of EVs, where delaying the new tax could lead to thousands of pounds in savings.

Act now and give yourself a 12-month buffer before the new road tax comes into effect!
